Night Time is the Right Time To Eat

Here is a Eating Right at Night
By Luigi Gratton, M.D., M.P.H.Vice President, Medical Affairs and Education.

For many, when the sun goes down, so does their willpower. They maintain their sensible eating habits during the day, only to eat junk food like pizza and ice cream at night. There is, however, a simple solution. You can control your appetite after dark by eating a healthy and nutritious snack.

Putting the Myth to Rest.
You’ve probably been told at some point that eating late at night is detrimental. However, there is no conclusive scientific evidence proving that calories ingested at night are metabolized differently than other times. Therefore, it is not the time of day that leads to weight gain, but rather the total daily caloric intake as a whole. Whether you're eating in the morning or at midnight, your body turns any extra calories into fat.

Feeding Frenzy
Metabolically speaking, our bodies have the lowest need for calories at night. Yet in America, we eat more during dinner than any other meal. One study showed that participants consumed 42% of their daily calories from dinnertime on. But there are reasons these unhealthy patterns are so commonplace. Some people don’t eat enough during the day, causing a drop in blood sugar levels, which can lead to over consumption at night. Others are simply overindulging as an emotional escape from stress or to beat boredom. We tend to mindlessly reach for junk food during sedentary activities such as watching television or using the computer. These foods contain large amounts of sugar and saturated fat which can lead to weight gain, insomnia, indigestion or even more serious health problems.

Suitable Snacks
The good news is that there are appropriate alternatives. You can effectively curb your hunger with a high protein, low calorie snack. An Herbalife Protein Bar is a great guilt-free snack, containing 12g of protein, healthy fiber, as well as 23 vitamins and minerals to help manage your weight. Roasted Soy Nuts with Cardia®† Salt is another healthy snack that is high in nutritional value. Both are packed with protein and flavor to keep you satisfied, and also rich in nutrients and fiber.

So the next time you feel like “midnight munching”, think about the benefits of a healthy, protein-powered snack. The nutritional difference will be like night and day.

I wanted to share this article with you about the "can't eat after 6 p.m." thing....who started that anyway? This article was taken from the www.herbalife.com web site and written by Dr. Luigi Gratton.

How To Calculate The Amount Of Protein

Here is a formula you can use taken from "The L.A. Shape Diet", by Dr. David Heber. This is found on page 45.

Here is what he says in his book....

As your lean body mass increases, so does the number of calories you burn each day at rest. Each pound of lean body mass burns 14 calories per day at rest. For example, a woman burning 1400 calories per day at rest ( with 100 pounds of lean mass ) needs 100 grams of protein.

100 pounds of lean mass x 14 calories per pound = 1400 calories a day

A man burning 2100 calories per day at rest ( with 150 pounds of lean body mass ) needs 150 grams of protein.

150 pounds of lean body mass x 14 calories per pound = 2100 calories per day.

In the book Dr. Heber suggests that your diet consist of 29 % protein.

How in the heck do you get your lean body mass index. I would check with your local health clubs or nutritionist. Tell them you want a fat test done. Its a machine that will ask you your weight, height, activity level etc. and when its all said and done a read-out is printed for you to keep to compare when you have it done again. This is a great tool for you to gauge how successful your health & exercise choices are.

Kids & Nutrition

Here are some numbers for you to think about that I found on various sites online. In 2006, 8.7 million children were without health insurance coverage for the entire year, 55% of children lived in counties that the air pollutants were above allowable levels, 17% of children ages 6-17 were considered overweight compared to 6% in 1979-1980, only 35 % of boys and 14% of girls get 100% of the RDA of calcium in their daily diet, and intake of low nutrient dense foods that include; soft drinks, candy, desserts, salty snack foods account for over 30% of the total daily caloric consumption of kids aged 8-18. Those are just a few stats to give you an idea of what is going on. Based on the mentioned statistics the kids need our help. Obviously times have changed with regards to physical activity and out of convenience we tend to buy more processed foods. I have a child in grade school and I have yet to hear about any kind of physical fitness testing. I remember taking those phyical fitness tests...ugh! It was a pain, however, it reminded me to keep active and at what level I was currently at and where I needed to be. I also remember gym class happening every day vs. a couple times a week which seems to be more the norm now. What does all this mean? Well, I think that we need to be an example as parents. It is recommended that we take in up to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables per day and I know that most of us "adults" are not getting that in and that means our children are not as well. We need to stress the importance of breakfast to our children. I like to explain it to my child by saying that if we were to get into the car to go to the store and there was no gas in the tank would we make it to the store? The answer everytime is NO. Then how can we expect our bodies to function at an optimum level if we do not give it the necessary fuel to "get moving" in the morning? Breakfast is the most skipped meal and yet it is the most important meal. We should be eating like kings in the morning! If they do not like to eat a big breakfast than you can find foods that are easy to transport like making them a meal replacement shake, whole grain cereal in a baggy, cereal bar or bagel. Its also recommended that you take a multivitamin to help you meet those daily requirements. There are plenty of choices for multivitamins out there for adults and children. Find the one that's right for you. If your not sure ask your doctor. Remember children love to be like "YOU" and If they see you eating than chanes are they will want to mimic your behavior and you will both start the day out right. Its a good idea to "plan" the night before your activities for after school. Include homework time, a physical activity, reading and a well balanced meal. One of the activities my child enjoys doing with me at home is a pilates video. It gets us both off the couch and pro-active about our health & fitness.
